Chapter 11

Rhubarb rests his head against my thigh and a surge of affection rushes through me. He's my first kitten and will always have that place in my heart. He climbs onto my knee and begins playing with the end of the scarf I'm wearing.

I shouldn't have put it on this morning, I should know by now that anything which dangles will only get destroyed by kittens.

Thomas sits on my desk chair, bouncing a toy up and down and watching Romeo and Ginger take turns at swatting it with their paws. My heart warms at the image, even if it should be focusing on making a plan. This is not the boy I need to concentrate on.

"So far, we don't have any way past the security system. Everyone has to be checked in when they go to visit and it's set up to detect people that aren't," Ryan says.

"Do we know if there's any detection spells that can get through it?" I ask Thomas.

"I doubt it. They'll have planned for even the most complicated of charms."

"What about curses?" I muse.

"What are you thinking?" A smile lifts the corner of his lips, as if he's understanding my meaning.

"I'm wondering if we can curse each other in order to get past the security."

"Won't they have thought to prepare for that?" Ryan asks. He swings his legs back and forth from where he's perched on my desk with Clover in his lap.

If someone had asked me six months ago how I'd feel about hot guys sat in my room with kittens surrounding them, I'd have told them nothing of the sort would ever happen. And that if it did, it wouldn't be my kind of thing.

And yet, here I am, loving every second of it.

"Not necessarily," Thomas responds, pulling my attention back to the task at hand. "But I might have a way to check."

"Oh?" I raise an eyebrow. Just like hot guys with kittens, a jailbreak hadn't been part of my plan either. I suppose life always takes unexpected turns. I should know that by now.

"I think there'll be an issue if we walk in with the curse on us, but once we're in there..."

"You think we can curse ourselves once we're inside the prison? Won't they pick up on that?"

"I don't know. The only way to test it is to cast something once we're there." The uncertainty in his eyes reveals just how nervous he is about that idea.

I turn my attention to two of the kittens who are playing in the middle of the room. I'm not sure what the game is, but they're distracting all the same.

"That's it," I whisper. "We don't need to do anything to ourselves, we can just create a distraction."

"You have one in mind?" Ryan leans forward and pays more attention to what I'm saying.

"We can't cast anything while we're inside the prison, or we'll get caught by the system, right?"

Thomas nods. "Though I believe it's only supposed to catch magic itself."

"So if we don't do any, we should get through without a problem.
